We have been hugely inspired by World Land Trust and all of the work they do, so now we want to give back to the world. Our new campaign, #MoreTreesMoreLife, aims to use the power of social media to plant an entire forest worth of trees. Together we can beat climate change.
1. Deforestation

Forests cover a massive 31% of the planets land area, and aside from being a beautiful landscape feature, they serve our existence in a multitude of ways. They purify both water and air, providing us with the basic means to live. They act as a vital carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere. And they act as vital habitats for both humans and animals, with currently 80% of Earths land animals living in forest environments. Despite this, these precious resources continue to be destroyed by the reckless activity of humans.

Every day countless trees are cut down to clear the way for human endeavours such as farming, the grazing of livestock, mining, and drilling. Combined, these activities account for more than half of all deforestation globally. The production of palm oil in Malaysia and Indonesia, and cattle ranching in the Amazon, are also major culprits that have contributed towards deforestation. Logging operations, which are at times illegal, have been especially harmful to our forests. More and more remote forests are being accessed by loggers, who continue to build new roads and routes into untouched areas.

Without forests we not only heighten the impacts of climate change, but we also threaten a diverse range of wildlife and remove a source of employment and resource for millions of people. Fortunately, there are many organisations and individuals that are fighting deforestation, conserving and protecting land in areas that have previously been vulnerable to deforestation.

Currently, we are losing 18.7 million acres of forests annually

2. World Land Trust

World Land Trust (WLT) was initially founded in 1989 to raise funds to purchase acres of threatened tropical forest in Belize, Central America, for a project called Programme for Belize. Following this, WLT continued to pioneer the ‘Buy an Acre’ concept of buying land for conservation. 30 years on, WLT is still at the forefront of ground-breaking habitat protection.

World Land Trust and its overseas project partners have been instrumental in the purchase and protection of more than 760,000 acres of tropical forest and other threatened habitats. Together, they ensure that more than four million acres of land is managed under active protection worldwide.

Through their conservation work, WLT has also been able to empower local people by using their expertise and knowledge of local organisations, rather than managing projects from the UK. They have also partnered with 30 conservation NGOs across the globe to help fund land purchase, wildlife reserve management, and rangers’ salaries. As the preservation of land and habitats is an ongoing project, it has been extremely important for them to build relationships with local conservation NGOs to ensure all wildlife can be protected longterm.

WLT’s commitment to overseas project partners and the land they protect is an important leveraging tool on governments around the world, and can have powerful effect to influence legislation that protects wildlife and habitats. This was demonstrated in 2017, when in response to international concern, Sir David Attenborough (in his capacity as a Patron of World Land Trust), wrote a letter to the Chief Minister of Sabah asking him to reconsider the construction of a bridge in Sukau. The bridge would have threatened one of the last sanctuaries of the rare pygmy elephant, as well as other species including the Critically Endangered Orang-utan. The letter was made public and published by the Guardian, with construction of the bridge cancelled shortly afterwards, citing the concern of NGOs and Sir David Attenborough as one of the main considerations.

3. #MoreTreesMoreLife

We have been hugely inspired by World Land Trust and all of the work they do, so now we want to give back to the world. Our new campaign, #MoreTreesMoreLife, aims to plant an entire forest worth of trees. The premise of the idea is simple:

Step 1: Donate £5 to our fundraising page, to plant one tree for a friend.

Step 2: Tag that friend on Twitter or Facebook using the message on our Just Giving page, to let them know about their new gift.

Step 3: In return, that friend should carry the gesture forward, donating a tree to a friend of their own.

The hope is that the chain will continue, until we plant an entire forest. We will be getting things started by donating an initial 50 trees to people that inspire us to make the world a better place. You don’t have to wait to be gifted a tree to get involved, instead take the initiative and begin your own chain by planting a tree for a friend.

All of our donations will go towards WLT, whose Plant a Tree programme is funding partners to plant trees in previously deforested areas of Brazil, Ecuador and Kenya. From seed to forest, WLT tends to the trees, ensuring that they can reach a point where they can survive on their own. Plus if the tree dies, another tree will be planted in its place. So rest assured the trees are in good hands!

4. We need your help

There have been a lot of great campaigns on social media like the 'ALS Ice Bucket Challenge’ that have really taken off and raised awareness and money towards great causes. Climate change is currently the greatest threat to our planet, and we hope to channel the power of social media to start something positive. We know our aim to build a forest is ambitious, but the fight against climate change requires a high level of ambition. The fight against climate change has taken massive strides in recent weeks and it is vital that we use this momentum to continue pushing forward.

Together we can beat climate change.
