Bao Ngo is selling her prints to make some money for her family following the devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey. Creativity is very often a great source of positive change and Bao’s initiative can hopefully go far in helping her family in Texas.
1. About Bao

Bao is a photographer that we wanted to feature because she was using her creative outlet to make a positive impact in the community, following the awful devastation of Hurricane Harvey. We came across Bao on Twitter selling her prints to aid her family against the damage that was caused by the hurricane. Their house was right by the Barker Reservoir in Texas and their entire neighbourhood was tragically destroyed.

For the past 4 years, following graduation from high school Bao has been living in New York. Bao was originally a graphic design student but dropped out after suffering with some financial and mental health problems, it was only after she left that she began to take photography more seriously. When we asked Bao about her move towards photography, she told us; "I guess when you’re forced to drop out of school due to poor health or anything else you kind of have a choice to keep pursuing something or not”. It’s not always easy to just carry on with thing during tough times, but it seems that photography has now become a great outlet for Bao to express herself. It’s great to see that her work can also be used to help others, as shown with the response to Hurricane Harvey.

2. The Power of Creativity

We asked Bao about the response she received by selling her prints to help her family:

“It's been a positive response, people have been asking me to set up a shop for over a year now so I finally did it. I didn't want to just do a GoFundMe even though there's no shame in that. It's just that so many people are already doing that. I wanted to use my skills somehow. The experience showed me that there's a community that cares about me, or in this case my family. That's positive.”

We wanted to make this feature as it shows the power of creativity. Bao is someone who has had her struggles but has been able to harness her creativity to produce outstanding prints. She tells us she has no degree to fall back on, no internships but she doesn't give up and continues to work on her own projects and what better a cause than to help her family.

3. Aspirations for the Future

Moving forward, Bao hopes to get more jobs as an artist so she doesn't have to go back to the retail or service industry. When speaking about the future Bao takes inspiration from Joseph Cornell:

“He took ordinary objects and turned them into beautiful sculptures and a big part of my work is finding the magic in every day scenes. He was also a self taught artist who made it big. I adore him”.
